Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is a safe and commonly used option that can help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. It is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask that rests gently over the nose.

Nitrous oxide does not put your child to sleep. Your child remains awake, breathes normally, and responds to our team throughout the visit. Many children feel calmer, lighter, or less worried while the nitrous oxide is being used.

This option can be especially helpful for children who are nervous, have a sensitive gag reflex, need dental treatment, or have difficulty sitting still for longer appointments. Our goal is to make the visit as positive and comfortable as possible while completing care safely.

At the end of the appointment, your child will breathe oxygen for a short period of time, and the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly. Most children feel back to normal soon afterward.
