Dental sealants are a simple preventive treatment used to help protect teeth from cavities. They are most often placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where deep grooves and pits can trap food, plaque, and bacteria.

Even with good brushing, toothbrush bristles may not fully reach into the deepest grooves of molars and premolars. Sealants create a thin protective layer over these areas, helping to “seal out” cavity-causing bacteria and reduce the risk of decay.

Applying a sealant is quick, comfortable, and does not require numbing. The tooth is cleaned and prepared, and the sealant material is carefully flowed into the grooves of the tooth. Once it hardens, it acts as a protective barrier over the chewing surface.

Sealants are especially helpful for children and teenagers as their permanent molars come in, but adults with deep grooves or higher cavity risk may benefit from them as well. During routine dental visits, we check existing sealants to make sure they are still intact and protecting the teeth properly.

Sealants work best as part of a complete prevention plan that includes brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, limiting frequent sugary snacks and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly.

Dental sealants are one of the easiest ways to protect cavity-prone areas and help keep teeth healthy for years to come.
