Periodontal maintenance is ongoing care for patients who have been treated for periodontal disease. After scaling and root planing or other gum disease treatment, regular maintenance visits help control bacteria, monitor gum health, and reduce the risk of disease progression.

For many patients, periodontal maintenance is recommended every three to four months. This interval is important because bacteria can rebuild below the gumline more quickly in patients with a history of periodontal disease. Your recommended schedule will depend on your gum measurements, bleeding levels, bone support, home care, medical history, and overall risk.

During periodontal maintenance visits, our hygienist will clean above and below the gumline, remove plaque and tartar, evaluate areas of inflammation, monitor periodontal pocket depths, and recommend X-rays when needed. These visits allow us to identify changes early and address problem areas before they become more advanced.

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition, but with consistent care it can often be managed successfully. If your gum health remains stable, that is a sign your maintenance schedule and home care routine are working well.
