Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to help prevent cavities. They are most commonly used on molars and premolars, where deep grooves can trap food and plaque.

Children often benefit from sealants when their permanent molars come in, especially the 6-year and 12-year molars. Even with good brushing, it can be difficult for toothbrush bristles to clean all the way into the pits and grooves of these teeth.

Sealants help protect these areas by creating a smooth barrier over the enamel, making it harder for bacteria and food particles to collect. Applying sealants is quick, comfortable, and does not require numbing.

The tooth is cleaned and prepared, and the sealant material is brushed onto the chewing surface, where it bonds to the tooth and hardens. At regular dental visits, we will check existing sealants and recommend repair or replacement if needed.

Sealants are one helpful part of cavity prevention. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, limiting frequent snacking or sugary drinks, and regular dental visits all help support long-term oral health.
