Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to save a tooth when the nerve or pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed, infected, or damaged. This can happen because of a deep cavity, a cracked or broken tooth, repeated dental treatment, or an injury to the tooth.

During root canal treatment, the infected or inflamed tissue inside the tooth is carefully removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, shaped, disinfected, and sealed. In many cases, this allows the natural tooth to be saved instead of removed.

Common signs that a tooth may need root canal therapy include lingering sensitivity to hot or cold,
spontaneous pain, pain when biting, swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gums, or discoloration of the tooth.

After root canal therapy, many back teeth need a crown to protect the remaining tooth structure and reduce the risk of fracture. We will explain whether a crown is recommended based on the tooth, the amount of remaining structure, and your bite.

Root canal therapy is designed to relieve pain, eliminate infection, and preserve your natural tooth. When a case is more complex or would be better served by specialist care, we will refer you appropriately.
