SERVICES > GENERAL SERVICES > TMJ Disorders and Pain

The temporomandibular joints, often called the TMJ, are the jaw joints located in front of each ear. These joints, along with the surrounding muscles and ligaments, help you open and close your mouth, chew, speak, and move your jaw.

When the jaw joints, muscles, or bite system are not functioning comfortably, patients may experience symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, facial soreness, limited opening, ear-area discomfort, or pain while chewing.

TMJ-related symptoms can have many possible causes, including clenching or grinding, jaw injury, arthritis, stress-related muscle tension, bite changes, or joint inflammation. Because the causes can vary, a careful evaluation is important before recommending treatment.

During an exam, we may evaluate your teeth, bite, jaw joints, muscles, range of motion, and signs of
clenching or wear. In many cases, conservative treatment is the best first step.

Conservative options may include:
  • Eating softer foods temporarily
  • Avoiding gum chewing or nail biting
  • Using heat or cold as directed
  • Reducing clenching habits when possible
  • Jaw stretching or relaxation techniques
  • Anti-inflammatory medication when appropriate
  • A custom night guard or bite appliance to help protect the teeth and reduce stress from clenching or grinding

Some TMJ conditions may require additional evaluation or referral to a specialist. Our goal is to help identify likely contributing factors, reduce discomfort, protect your teeth, and recommend treatment appropriate for your specific situation.
