Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and getting the right care quickly can make a big difference. If you are experiencing tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or an injury to the mouth, please call our office as soon as possible so we can help guide you.
Common dental emergencies include:
Toothache or dental pain: Rinse gently with warm water and carefully floss around the area to remove any trapped food. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as this can irritate or burn the tissue. If pain persists, call our office so we can evaluate the cause.
Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid chewing on that side. If there is swelling, a cold compress may help. Save any broken pieces if possible and call our office for guidance.
Knocked-out permanent tooth: If an adult tooth is knocked out, time is very important. Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline if available, but do not scrub the root. If possible, gently place it back into the socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva and call our office immediately. Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth.
Lost crown or filling: If a crown or filling comes out, save it if you can. Avoid chewing on that tooth and call our office to schedule an evaluation. Do not use household glues or adhesives to try to recement dental work.
Bitten lip, cheek, or tongue: Clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress. If bleeding does not stop, the cut is deep, or swelling is significant, seek urgent medical or dental care.
Swelling or infection: Swelling in the gums, jaw, or face can indicate infection and should be evaluated promptly. If swelling affects breathing, swallowing, vision, or is accompanied by fever or feeling very ill, seek emergency medical care right away.
