Scaling and root planing, sometimes called a deep cleaning, is a non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. It is recommended when plaque, tartar, and bacteria have collected below the gumline and are contributing to gum inflammation, deeper pockets, and bone loss.

During scaling and root planing, the roots of the teeth are carefully cleaned above and below the gums. The goal is to remove harmful buildup, reduce bacteria, and create a healthier environment for the gums to heal and tighten around the teeth.

This treatment is often completed over more than one visit so that we can thoroughly clean each area and keep you comfortable. Local anesthetic may be used when needed.

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition. While lost bone support usually cannot grow back on its own, the disease can often be controlled with the right care. Long-term success depends on a team approach: careful home care, regular periodontal maintenance visits, and ongoing monitoring of gum measurements and bone levels.
